SIRG is a free referral-based service established to provide advocacy, support empowerment and training for the Black and other communities across London and the South East.
Data supports the fact that there is a lack of equity and equality in the UK education system.
Black Caribbean students are almost four times more likely to be permanently excluded than the overall school population. Mixed White and Black Caribbean pupils also face high exclusion rates. Pupils at "SEN Support" level are four times more likely to be suspended and five times more likely to face permanent exclusion than those without SEND. Students with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) are three times more likely to be excluded compared to those without such plans.
In response to these challenges, SIRG offers hands-on support in navigating the education system. We will help you prepare for and attend school meetings, working collaboratively with schools on your behalf. We act with a measure of impartiality, but ensure that your voice is heard and respected. This includes support and guidance at more complex Governors and Independent Review panels, helping to promote fair, transparent, and child-centred outcomes.
Although we don't always win, it is good to know that parents and carers truly appreciate the way in which SIRG stands in the gap. We also strongly believe, as always, that the win is when we ensure that our clients voices are heard and we help secure the most appropriate pathway for the young person, regardless of a Governors or Independent Review Panel.
“ Thank you for SIRG. My friend and I were so shocked with the lovely support, although the independent review panel decision agreed with the governing board, Richard and Nadia spoke very well and really stood up for my friend, the support was unexpected and fantastic.”
You have been sent by God. I truly appreciate all the support you have given us. I’ve just seen the message you sent to my son’s teacher, and I can’t express how much it means to know that you are supporting me.someone is finally listening and taking action.
Thank you for standing by us, for speaking up when I felt like I had no voice, and for showing genuine care for my son’s future. Your involvement has given me hope again and reminded me that there are people who truly want to make a difference.
